VCE Accounting Headstart

Short, carefully curated courses designed to give VCE Accounting students the edge they need to thrive. All lessons are delivered by Mark Wood, an experienced teacher and VCAA assessor of VCE Accounting.


In-person sessions are held in a private space within Hawthorn Library,* with online options also available. Sessions are delivered in small groups of 1 to 3 students, ensuring maximum attention for each student and allowing content to be tailored to their individual needs. Our approach empowers students to get a head start on all content and excel in VCE Accounting.

Unit 1 - The Role of Accounting in Business (3 sessions)

This unit examines the establishment of businesses and the role of accounting in evaluating their success or failure, emphasizing the importance of accounting information for stakeholders. Students analyse financial and non-financial data, prepare reports for sole proprietors, and consider ethical, financial, and environmental factors in business decision-making.


All content will be covered concisely and culminate with an assessed end of unit exam. All week email communication.


3 x 90 minute sessions, held weekly. Total fees: $410 per student, plus Accounting Textbook

Unit 2 - Accounting and Decision-Making for a Trading Business (4 sessions)

This unit focuses on the accounting process for sole proprietors of trading businesses, emphasizing inventory, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and non-current assets, using both manual and ICT-based methods. Students analyse performance, predict outcomes, and recommend strategies to improve business results while incorporating the Conceptual Framework, financial indicators, and ethical considerations in decision-making.


All content will be covered concisely and culminate with an assessed end of unit exam. All week email communication. 


4 x 90 minute sessions held weekly. Total fees: $540 per student, plus Accounting Textbook

Unit 3 - Financial Accounting for a Trading Business (4 sessions)

This unit explores financial accounting for sole proprietors of trading businesses, focusing on the double-entry system, accrual accounting, and perpetual inventory recording. Students analyse financial reports, evaluate business performance, and recommend strategies while considering the Conceptual Framework, performance indicators, and ethical implications of business decisions.


All content will be covered concisely and culminate with an assessed end of unit exam. All week email communication. 


4 x 90 minute sessions held weekly. Total fees: $540 per student, plus Accounting Textbook

Unit 4 - Recording, Reporting, Budgeting and Decision Making (4 sessions)

This unit advances students' understanding of accounting for sole proprietors, focusing on the double-entry system, accrual accounting, perpetual inventory, balance day adjustments, and depreciation methods using both manual and ICT-based processes. Students analyse reports, evaluate business performance, and recommend strategies while integrating budgeting, the Conceptual Framework, financial indicators, and ethical considerations into decision-making.


All content will be covered concisely and culminate with an assessed end of unit exam. All week email communication.
